The People Who Count - Part 5 - September 2025
PembrokeshireSport.co.uk is very proud of our unrivalled coverage of local cricket but readily admit that a huge factor in such blanket coverage relies on fantastic support from wonderful scorers in a range of clubs who supply us with scores and other match details - and that is why we gratefully dub them:
THE PEOPLE WHO COUNT!
Interestingly, the majority of them started because their husbands and/or children were involved - and they have now extended their expertise to such a level that they also spread the score lines nationwide on the ‘Play-Live Cricket’ app, whilst the fellers involved tend to rely more on their scorebooks - but still take pride in making them look like works of art!
Over the next couple of weeks, we hope to mention as many as possible, so if your club has a scorer who does a great job outside the top two divisions then do let us know – and to all of them, old and young, we say a huge thank you for your unswerving support – AND
SINCERELY HOPE WE SEE YOU AGAIN NEXT SEASON!
13. Helen Hodges (Lamphey)
If there was an award for scoring loyalty when a club has had its ups and downs then Helen Hodges would be a prime candidate because in the many years as scorer of Lamphey she has seen them win trophies galore when Australian Dave Lovell led the way - and even now she is still doing the same smashing job when the village side are in the third division.
Helen knows her cricketing onions and when I need to phone her now, perhaps for cup games, I know that the details won’t just be about raw stats but quirky little things that might have happened in the game, like a youngster’s debut or a great catch or anything else to bring context to our readers!
14. Steve Mills Snr (Johnston)
‘Millsy’ is another of our few male scorers and he started out after watching his son, Stephen (Jnr) play so well. Even when Mills Jnr moved off to play in the top echelon he carried on helping Steve James to mow the outfield and still does great work at Glebelands (he has a back gate from his home onto the outfield.
He is another who is quite unflappable when I phone him at the wrong time. There is one thing for sure, that in Steve Mills (Snr) it is a case of ‘What You See Is What You Get’ - and I like what I see, despite having taught him more years ago than either of us care to remember!
15. Emma Summons (Johnston)
‘Millsy’ joins with Emma Summons in keeping score if she is needed, whilst she is either playing for the fellers or organising their tea, which is highly recommended!.
Emma is a very gifted all-round sporting young lady who captains Haverfordwest Ladies RFC and Milford Haven Hockey Club, as well as playing cricket for Johnston in the men’s league, when needed – as well as managing to look after her young family!
